Finding Handyman Help: RentAHuman, Taskrabbit and Thumbtack

Compare ways to find local handyman help for small jobs: how Taskrabbit and Thumbtack work, how a RentAHuman task request differs, and what to confirm first.

The right way to find handyman help depends on the job and how you want to choose someone. Compare the task scope, location, qualifications, availability and payment terms before committing. RentAHuman offers a funded task request that people apply to; it is not an instant handyman dispatch service.

A furniture assembly job needs different information from a repair that requires a licensed professional, so start with what needs doing, where it is and which skills it takes. Then compare the actual person, scope and appointment details on whichever service you use.

💡

Have a small job such as furniture assembly, mounting or a few minor fixes? The handyman request guide shows what is supported and what is not, explains how your payment is held in escrow until the work is reviewed, and has a button to post the task. Posting a request does not guarantee a local applicant or a confirmed appointment.

Start a handyman request

Three ways to find handyman help#

  • Taskrabbit

    Starting point
Enter the task and address, compare Taskers by hourly rate, skills and reviews, then pick a time
    Check before committing
The Tasker’s rate, the task details, and that the Tasker has scheduled the task on their side
  • Thumbtack

    Starting point
Browse local pros’ profiles and reviews, check prices and chat about the project, then book in the app
    Check before committing
Scope, price, qualifications and the booking terms offered for your project
  • RentAHuman

    Starting point
Describe and fund a task request with your city, date window and budget; people apply to it
    Check before committing
Each applicant’s suitability, tools, materials and timing, and how acceptance works

Taskrabbit#

Taskrabbit's how it works page describes telling it what you need done and where, comparing Taskers by hourly rate, skills and customer reviews, messaging your Tasker to confirm details and an arrival time, and paying in the app once the task is done. The same page says every Tasker passes an identity and criminal background check before being approved. Its hiring instructions add that a task counts as scheduled once the Tasker schedules it on their side, so look for that confirmation before planning around the visit.

Thumbtack#

Thumbtack's how it works page sets out three steps: browse profiles and read verified reviews from people in your area, check prices and chat through your project with pros, then choose a pro and book the project in the app. Follow the options shown for your project rather than assuming every job uses the same quote or booking process.

Both companies describe their own customer protection programmes — Taskprotect on Taskrabbit's how-it-works page and the Thumbtack Guarantee on Thumbtack's home page — and both say terms apply. Read the current terms for your job rather than relying on a summary.

RentAHuman#

RentAHuman works the other way round: you describe the job and set the budget, and people apply to it. The steps, in order:

  1. Describe the task — what needs doing, your city or neighbourhood, a date window, your budget and what finished looks like. Posting needs a free account.
  2. Fund it — the request goes live once its escrow is funded from your wallet balance or through Stripe Checkout. Funding publishes the request; it does not assign or dispatch anyone.
  3. People apply — people who can reach the location apply with a note. Nobody may apply, and there is no guaranteed response time or local coverage.
  4. Choose who does it — auto-review is on by default: it accepts applicants who qualify, declines clear mismatches with a reason and leaves uncertain ones for you. Switch it off when you create the request if you want to compare every applicant yourself.
  5. Coordinate privately — accepting someone opens a task conversation. Agree the timing and share the exact address and access details there, not in the public request.
  6. Approve and pay — you have 4 days after the task is marked complete to release payment, ask for changes or reject the work; releasing is final. Rejecting opens a dispute that RentAHuman's team decides with a full refund or payment to the worker, and if you don't respond in time the team reviews the work. If nobody suitable applies, cancel the unassigned request and its funding returns to your RentAHuman balance.

These descriptions cover each service's customer workflow. They do not establish that a service offers a particular API, permits a given automation method or has the same coverage as another. Check any integration against the company's current official documentation.

When a RentAHuman request fits#

A request suits a clearly described task with a finish line you can check: assembling flat-pack furniture, hanging shelves with suitable hardware, replacing cabinet handles, or a few hours of carrying and loading. Tell applicants the quantity, parts, tools and access constraints. The handyman request guide lists supported examples and limits.

⚠️
There is no guaranteed local coverage, response time or fixed handyman price list. RentAHuman does not verify trade licences, insurance or certifications. Work that needs them, a permit, or regulated electrical, plumbing, gas, roofing or structural expertise is outside this offering. An emergency repair needs an appropriate provider, not a request that may go unanswered.

Write a brief applicants can assess#

This is an illustrative template, not a completed customer job or a promise of availability. Replace every bracketed detail:

Assemble one desk and one bookcase in [city or neighbourhood]. Product links: [links]. All parts have arrived: [yes/no]. Preferred date window: [dates and times]. Total budget: [amount]. Please tell me about your experience with these items and which tools you will bring. Access: [stairs or lift, and anything heavy to carry]. Done means both items are assembled following their instructions, packaging is tidied, and completion photos are shared in the task conversation.

If the product instructions call for wall anchoring or mounting, say so, and confirm the surface, hardware and the applicant's experience before accepting. Keep street addresses, access codes and private contact details out of the public request; share what is needed in the private task conversation after you accept someone.

Compare applicants on the job, not the label#

Each application links to the person's profile with their rating and reviews. Ask about similar work, and confirm tools, materials, timing and what the budget covers. Make sure the person understands every item in a combined small-jobs request. A general handyman description is not proof of a licence, insurance or experience with your particular task.

If you rent, get any permission you need from the property owner before alterations. If the scope changes after you accept someone, agree the revised work in the task conversation before any extra work begins.

Can an AI assistant help?#

An assistant can help turn your description into a clear request. The assistant ordering guide explains the supported paths: an assistant that uses a browser fills in the form while you sign in and approve payment, and agents with a RentAHuman API key can preview and post a request through the REST API or MCP server. The guide marks where you approve funding, hiring and payment release. Do not assume an assistant can verify trade qualifications or guarantee that someone attends.

Choose the workflow that fits#

If you want to compare a provider's offered schedule and rate, look at the booking options Taskrabbit or Thumbtack show for your job. If you want to describe a finite task and review people who apply to your budget and date window, a RentAHuman request may fit. Either way, confirm the exact scope and appointment rather than treating a search result as an agreement.
